What Is It?

Employer Matching Explained

An employer matching gift program is a corporate benefit in which your company agrees to financially match donations you make to eligible nonprofit organizations — often dollar-for-dollar, sometimes more.

Grace House Akron is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, making us eligible for most employer matching programs. That means a gift you make today could automatically be doubled — or even tripled — through your workplace.

Most programs take only 10–15 minutes to submit. Your company does the rest — sending a matching check directly to Grace House Akron on your behalf.

The Process

How It Works in Three Simple Steps

Make Your Donation

Give to Grace House Akron through any of our donation channels — online, by mail, or at an event. Save your donation receipt; you’ll need it for your match request.

Submit a Match Request

Log into your employer’s giving portal (or contact your HR department) and submit a matching gift request. Enter Grace House Akron’s EIN: 81-4420042 and the amount you donated.

We Receive Your Match

Once approved, your employer sends a matching check directly to Grace House Akron. We’ll send a thank-you acknowledging both gifts for your tax records.

Common Eligibility Factors

Every employer program is different. Here are the most common requirements to check with your HR department or giving portal:

Employment Status

Most programs include full-time employees; many extend to part-time employees and retirees. Some also include spouses of employees.

Donation Timing

Requests must typically be submitted within 30–180 days of your original donation. Check your employer’s deadline so you don’t miss out.

Minimum Gift Amount

Many programs have a minimum donation threshold — commonly $25–$50 — before a match is made. Some also set annual maximum match amounts.

Nonprofit Type

Grace House Akron is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, qualifying for the vast majority of employer matching programs.

Match Ratios

Ratios commonly range from 0.5:1 to 3:1. Even a 50-cent-on-the-dollar match meaningfully increases your impact for the residents we serve.

Volunteer Time Off

Some employers also offer grants for volunteer hours. If you volunteer at Grace House, ask your employer about volunteer grant programs too.

What information do I need to submit a match request?
You’ll typically need: our organization name (Grace House Akron, Inc.), our Tax ID / EIN (81-4420042), the date and amount of your donation, and a copy of your receipt or confirmation. Our mailing address is 475 N. Howard St., Akron, OH 44310.
How long does the matching process take?
Timelines vary by employer, but most matching gifts are processed within 4–8 weeks of submission. Some companies process them quarterly. We’ll send a tax acknowledgment letter for both your gift and the matched amount once received.
I already donated — can I still request a match?
Absolutely — most programs allow match requests for donations made within the past 30 to 180 days (some allow up to a year). Check your employer’s portal or HR department for the exact window. If you need a duplicate receipt for a past gift, we’re happy to provide one.
My employer isn’t in the database. What should I do?
Many companies have matching programs that aren’t widely advertised. We encourage you to email your HR or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team directly and share our nonprofit details. Would you like a template email? Contact us and we’ll send one right over.
Does the matching gift count as my tax-deductible donation?
Your personal donation is tax-deductible. The employer’s matching contribution is made by the company and is not claimed on your personal taxes. We’ll send separate acknowledgment letters for both. Please consult your tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
